Designed as a sequence of immersive outdoor experiences balancing openness, intimacy, and contemporary tropical living.

Where layered greenery, dark reflective water, and architectural restraint create a resort-like atmosphere above the lake.

Located in Jumeirah Islands, this project marked the second collaboration between MDO and the homeowners Clients already deeply familiar with the lifestyle and atmosphere of the island. This time, however, the vision was different.

Positioned on a highly elevated plot overlooking the lake and Dubai skyline beyond, the villa offered a rare sense of openness and scale. To enhance this unique setting, the owners expanded the property further by acquiring an additional plot, allowing the landscape to unfold with far greater generosity and freedom.

Rather than creating a garden that simply follows the villa levels, the design intentionally explored transitions, terraces, and layered movement through space. Soft level changes create a more immersive experience throughout the property while maintaining a calm architectural balance.

At the center of the backyard sits a contemporary infinity-edge swimming pool finished in darker tones, reflecting both the surrounding tropical planting and the lake beyond. The water was designed to feel deep, calm, and connected to the natural surroundings rather than overly bright or decorative.

A large architectural canopy anchors the outdoor living experience. Wrapped with lush planting and carefully integrated into the villa’s material palette, the structure houses the lounge, bar, and dining spaces within one cohesive environment. Despite its generous proportions, the layered greenery softens the scale, allowing the space to feel intimate and relaxed.

The tropical character becomes even stronger along the side gardens, where dense planting creates shaded pathways and cooler microclimates that completely transform the atmosphere of the property. Movement through these spaces feels immersive, almost resort-like, contrasting beautifully with the openness of the lakefront views.

At the entrance, the experience begins with a wide and welcoming driveway framed by mature planting and strong horizontal lines. A quiet seating moment near the main entrance was introduced to soften the scale of the arrival and create a more residential and welcoming atmosphere.

More than a garden, Beyond the Palms became an exploration of scale, elevation, tropical layering, and contemporary outdoor living — balancing openness toward the skyline with intimacy within the landscape itself.
